WHERE ARE THEY ?
Manic phases are one of the hallmarks of bipolar disorder. During the course of a year-long project about the disease, I shot in many different situations and with a good number of patients, healthcare providers, and relatives. At that time, I was embedded in the emergency ward of a very large psychiatry hospital. This patient was very happy to be photographed and lived her manic phase with a smile and a clear taste for being a part of my reportage. She was sitting in the hallway of the hospital, alone, literally and metaphorically alone in her own world. I simply approached her and shot over the course of a few minutes. Rather than isolating one image, I kept the entire moment when building this image, to give a good representation of the various states of mind that she went through. - Zurich, Switzerland, 15 August 2018
